From Provost Julie Ross: Continued support for those impacted by conflict in Iran, the Middle East

Dear colleagues,

With the ongoing conflict in Iran and the impacts felt in countries throughout the Middle East, I want to reaffirm Virginia Tech’s steadfast support for students, faculty, and staff who are affected by the violence in the region. These events continue to be distressing, particularly for those within our campus community who have family members, friends, and loved ones impacted by the unrest or serving overseas in the military.

I recognize that this moment may feel overwhelming. The worry for loved ones and the potential for disrupted communications can make it hard to focus on coursework, research, or daily responsibilities. As I shared in my January message to the academic community, the pressure caused by uncertainty and concern for loved ones can understandably affect well-being, focus, and capacity. Please know that you are not alone in this crisis and support is available to you.

I would encourage all of us — especially those in teaching, supervisory, and leadership positions — to continue leading with empathy, patience, and flexibility. For instructional faculty, this may mean offering understanding and reasonable accommodations to students who are navigating academic responsibilities while under emotional strain. For supervisors and colleagues, it may involve checking in, listening, and ensuring that faculty and staff know they are supported and aware of available resources.

Our university community is strengthened by the care we extend to one another. Thank you for your compassion, attentiveness, and continued commitment to supporting the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.

In the spirit of Ut Prosim

Julie
